Summer 2012, our family of two adults and two children, a 12-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl, set out on a five-week overland expedition in a specially equipped Land Rover, covering 4,500 km through southern Africa.
Route Overview
Our journey begins in Windhoek, heading northwest through the vast Namib Desert to the remote and sparsely populated Kaokoland. From there, we cross classic African bushveld via Etosha National Park, renowned for its wildlife and open plains.
The route then turns east toward Botswana, following a rough track across the Kalahari Desert, passing through the small settlement of Tsumkwe.
Highlights in Botswana
In Botswana, our four-wheel drive journey takes us to some of southern Africa’s most iconic wilderness areas:
- Okavango Delta
- Central Kalahari Game Reserve
- Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans
- Moremi Game Reserve
- Chobe National Park
Journey’s End
The expedition concludes at the spectacular Victoria Falls, on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe.
What follows is a detailed account of our 2012 self-drive expedition through Namibia, Botswana, and Zambia, - with landscapes, wildlife encounters, and practical overland travel experiences along the way.
