The Arimas River Road – A Desert in Bloom

Leaving Fish River Canyon behind [link], we follow the beautiful Arimas River Road, a route we have driven once before in 2022 and one that remains among our absolute favourites in Namibia [link]. In our opinion, it rivals even the famous D707, which we will encounter later on this journey.

The road winds through magnificent desert scenery with remarkably little traffic, making the drive itself one of the highlights of the day.

Our destination is Klein Aus Vista, where we have booked the unique self-catering stone cottage known as The Boulder for three nights.

Before setting off, we make sure that the road has not been washed away by the exceptionally heavy rainfall three weeks earlier. Several times along the way we cross the normally dry Arimas River. Compared with our previous visit, there are now several more gates to pass through, accompanied by signs reminding visitors not to camp or collect firewood.

It seems that more people have discovered this beautiful road following the Arimas River, with its impressive mountains rising on either side. Perhaps the secret is slowly getting out.

What a beautiful drive!

We don't meet a single car during the entire 100-kilometre journey. Once, we spot a lone shepherd far away in the distance. Otherwise, there is nothing but uninterrupted wilderness.

And yet, something is very different this time.

The desert is blooming.

The landscape is transformed by an extraordinary display of colour. Patches of yellow, purple, white, red and peach flowers appear everywhere, mixed with fresh green grass, dry grass tufts and the occasional hardy tree along the river valley.

It is difficult to believe that this is the same landscape we drove through on our previous visit.

We stop several times to take photographs, but eventually decide that there is only one sensible thing to do: stop in the middle of the road for a coffee.

There we sit, surrounded by flowers, grasses and mountains, with not another vehicle in sight.

We feel extraordinarily privileged to witness something that is both fleeting and highly unusual. In a land where drought is normally such a defining part of the landscape, the sudden explosion of colour feels almost magical.

The Arimas River Road delivered the first time we drove it.

This time, it delivers again—only now wrapped in flowers.

Fish River Canyon and Tsau Khaeb (Sperrgebiet) National Park, part 2

After two nights in the Kalahari, we continue southwest towards one of Namibia's greatest natural wonders—Fish River Canyon.

For the next two nights we will stay at Fish River Canyon Lodge, which enjoys an extraordinary location right on the edge of the world's second-largest canyon. Few hotels can honestly claim to offer a true room with a view, but this is certainly one of them. Waking up to the vast canyon stretching endlessly across the landscape is an unforgettable experience.

The highlight of our stay will be the lodge's seven-hour Canyon Drive, descending from the rim to the canyon floor before climbing back to the top. We were fortunate enough to experience this excursion on a previous visit, and it remains one of the most memorable activities we have done anywhere in Namibia. We are therefore particularly excited to share it with my brother and sister-in-law.

For those preferring a more relaxed pace, the area also offers excellent walking trails along the canyon rim, while the swimming pool provides one of the finest views imaginable—even if the water is rather chilly during the Namibian winter!

Our destination is Klein Aus Vista, where we have booked the unique self-catering stone cottage known as The Boulder for three nights. Built around an enormous granite boulder, the cottage blends beautifully into the surrounding landscape and offers complete peace and privacy on the edge of the former Sperrgebiet.

For more than a century, this vast area was closed to the public because of its rich diamond deposits. Today it forms Tsau Khaeb National Park, protecting one of the world's most important biodiversity hotspots, famous for its remarkable succulent flora and pristine desert ecosystems.

During our stay, we plan to explore several of the well-marked walking trails around Klein Aus Vista before making a day trip to the historic coastal town of Lüderitz and the haunting ghost town of Kolmanskop, where drifting desert sand slowly continues to reclaim the abandoned diamond-mining settlement. A secret gem: Arimas River Road (D463 from vest / C13)

Namibia is the perfect country for awesome road trips! Often visitors report the most beautiful roads of Namibia that you really shouldn’t miss. We have already had the privilege to try many of these visiting Namibia five times. 

Now we will tell you a secret! On this trip, we found the most fantastic road that we have never heard of before! Let's call it "Arimas River Road". It connects the “Diamond Sperrgebiet” east border and the Fish River Canyon´s western parts. A secret gem!

When we stayed at Eagle's Nest in Klein Aus Vista (link), our next destination was Fish River Lodge (link) on the western rim of Fish River Valley. From the travel agency, we were advised to drive along the large paved B4 road towards Keetmanshoop, and then drive south on the D463 to reach the track towards Fish River Lodge. However, at the Tracks4Africa app (highly recommended), we could spot another tempting route! 

• Instead, take D463 from C13 (the road to Rosh Pinah) 👍
• Also possible other way around; D463 from the entrance to Fish River Lodge track to C13 
• However, the part of D463 from the entrance to Fish River Lodge track to B4 is not very interesting

We ask about the road conditions at the reception in the Desert Horse Inn Lodge. We are advised it should be possible as long as there is no rain, as we have to cross several riverbeds. We inform the reception that we will take this route instead thus they can send a rescue party if we do not show up at Fish River Lodge. It turnes out to be one of the most stunningly beautiful routes we've driven on five trips to Namibia!

After we turn off the D463 towards east, we only meet one car for the next 3 hours!! In the beginning, we have beautiful mountains on our left hand. (Mt Witputkuppe 1351m & Mt. Nasepberg). Also, we see the most wonderful mountain formations with many different layers in the rocks.

We pass some farm gates, and now, the road follows the Arimas Riverbed, which we cross several times. It is so beautiful and endlessly desolate!

After two hours' drive along D463, we cross two larger - but fine - passages of the river, where it widens and there is more vegetation.

This could be challenging places if there was water! Finally, we reach the D459, which we pass on our left hand on the way to the beginning of the track to Fish River Lodge. After D459 (still on D463), we pass the very beautiful "Konkiep River Crossing", where there is actually reed forest (!)

We are relieved when we finally reach the entrance gate at the track to Fish River Lodge (and 45 mins. more interesting drive).

Word of warning:

• Very desolate, far from help
• No cell phone reception
• 4WD is recommended (but unproblematic for us in dry weather)
• Bring plenty of water (at least 5L per person)
